School holidays!

The school holidays are here again!

Well done to all our students for getting through another term - y
ou've now got two weeks to relax and enjoy yourself before next term starts!

SIDE's teacher librarians will also be taking a well earned break but the library will remain open for most of the holidays, staffed by Michael, our library technician.

Michael will be here from 8.30am to 3.30pm every weekday except for Thursday 5th and Friday 6th July.

If you would like to come in to return or borrow books please feel free.

If you can only make it in on one of the days we are closed, or you come here to find the library unattended you can make your way to Building A reception and the staff there will assist you.

Have a wonderful break - we look forward to seeing you next term!

Red Room Poetry at SIDE

Poet and visual artist Lilly Blue conducted two Red Room Poetry Object sessions in Saba earlier today for Year 3-10 SIDE students.

Students and teachers thoroughly enjoyed these sessions which saw Lilly take everyone through how to think differently about an object.

Students brought an object that was special to them along to the session, and drew and wrote about it in different ways.

Lilly then talked about simile and metaphor, and the group made a collective poem by contributing a simile written about themselves.

The next activity was continuous writing - not stopping for a whole three minutes no matter what came out!

By the end of the session, many students had created a draft of a poem about their object, ready to refine throughout next term.

Lilly's warmth, energy, encouragement and positivity helped all students and teachers to create and participate, and everyone left feeling inspired and ready to write more!

A massive thank you to Lilly for presenting these sessions, and to Amy Rosato and Susan Cullen for organising this fantastic event!

Philosoraptor says:

You might receive an email today reminding you to return library books that you have on loan until the end of this term.

If you do, please make an effort to return these books ASAP!

We understand that it can take a while for books to get back to us in the mail, or that you might need the book until the very last day of term.

We won't start chasing up overdue books until Week Two of next term which is plenty of time for them to get back to SIDE.

If for any reason you are unable to return you books - perhaps you are an overseas student, or maybe you just haven't finished with them yet - please send us an email so we can renew them.

Red Room Poetry 2018

After a great effort in 2016 and 2017, SIDE is again participating in the Red Room Poetry Object competition in 2018!

The Red Room Poetry Object invites students in Years 3-10 and their teachers, across Australia and New Zealand, to write poems inspired by their own special and curious objects.

This year, SIDE is happy to invite Sydney poet and artist Lilly Blue to conduct a poetry workshop with our students.

Lilly is coming to SIDE on Wednesday 27th June (next week!) and will be presenting two Saba sessions - one for Years 7-10 at 9.30am and one for Years 3-6 at 11.15am.

Students who study English through SIDE are automatically enrolled in their year level's session, and both sessions are open to all Year 3-10 SIDE students.

If you aren't enrolled but would like to attend, please contact SIDE teacher librarian Amy Rosato.

For more information on these sessions check out the Red Room Poetry course in Moodle.

2018 FIFA World Cup at the SIDE Library

The 2018 FIFA World Cup kicks off in Russia on Thursday and we here at the SIDE Library Resource Centre are getting excited for it!

We have a wide range of fiction books about football (or soccer if you prefer!) as well as biographies of some of the world's greatest players, like Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar and Luis Suarez.

We also have nonfiction titles on the history of the World Cup, and those less familiar with the sport can learn all about it by reading the ultimate guide to the beautiful game.

If you would like to borrow any of these titles please contact us and our football mad library technician will send them out to you.
